Silence now

I hear screaming in the dark
childish eyes sparkling,
flames excite the night,
twigs squirming in the heat
sap boiling from wounds,
hurried prunings  piled
around the  aquiescent Guy
dressed in dad's  pyjamas
belly soon alight midst
cheers and mocking laughter.

Hot dogs,spicy wedges
beer for dad and wine for mum
oohs and aahs and sparklers,
rockets lighting up the sky
kaleidoscopic patterns
lost behind the clouds.
soon embers die, the final twigs,
one last flame, sizzling
in the rain, which held off,
long enough just long enough.
Sleepy ageless children
rescuing  potatoes from the flames
silence now and bedtime.
