Spawning

I hesitated while burying my first secret under a bedroom
window at dusk the night before we deserted Sculthorpe.
I needed to leave something of myself that he might retrieve
rather than telling him face-to-face. It became the property
of rooted grass the color of mandrake we would never taste.
(It only gets to be the color truth when impaled with fate.)

I had my first kiss 4348 nautical miles (which sounds closer
than 5003 regular miles, and less painful than 8052 kilometers)
away from that place. I hesitate to remember anything, his American
name or ivory face; only characteristics between variables of two lands
drenched with either rain or heat. (You only get to be the color love
when distance doesn't dictate your needs.)

I shoved my first note through a locker the day I deserted the
desert. I left no room for a chanced response, and don't remember
much else except avoiding a face-to-face, a spelling bee
that didn't take kindly to European vowels, and British accents
with skin the color of baked bone being mocked. (You only get to be
the color latte if you bled with the student hierarchy.)
_

Now, I can talk about the paint and words I became from all of that,
but nothing directly, or we'd be back in the same boat with tangled
meanings the color of mistrust threatening to disrupt the river current
of having moved on between us. And, hey, let's be face-to-face;
we're too far gone now.  We're distanced from another chance
like a fleet of armadas at 5286 nautical miles (which is more hopeful
than 6083 regular miles, and less painful than 9789 kilometers).

(You only get to be the color of salmon if you fight your way back;
We hesitated and were eaten by bears...just like that.)
