Just The Way Of The World?

My political ideals must be stuck in an earlier generation
the landscape is barren of confidence building public servants
a feeling that a clash of political views
doesn't make a fellow citizen an enemy
losing ones soul to win an election
inducing the barons of unfettered capitalism
to bankroll the cost of media manipulation

I must be naive to think that a candidate
appeals to the conscience of the electorate
but not just trying out platitudes
that people want to hear
but rather what the need to hear
it is way past due that we are honest
about why we still have hungry people
when so much food is produced
why American companies feed off
of misery by exporting weapons
why there is a mad rush to dig
a further hole with global warming

Still believing that even the most dangerous
president taps into something positive
if only a small portion
that the power to make a course correction is still
grounded in citizen participation
be not only cursing the dark but rather
escape the lack of illumination
and embrace the warmth of light

Embrace humanity our connection to all
from the little boy being taught to hate Yanks
to the father of a service person
refusing to acknowledge that
a commander in chief may not be
as pristine as the media may suggest
in the tradition of political "agitators"
whether socialistic or libertarians
occupiers or tea party enthusiasts

And so I am "Waiting For Godot"
i better find a seat
and when she or he arrives
please get me to the dentist
so my false teeth can be inserted
yes the wait may be that long
and i will dance in front of my father's grave
knowing that the peace he wanted for the world
is once again a bright possibility
