Meanwhile

The earthquake hits
A child who
Seconds earlier
Was enjoying a milkshake
Is virtually encased
In rubble and masonry
Has only dust to breathe
She suffocates
Slowly

Meanwhile
In the Southern Sudan
The crops
Have failed again
There is no harvest
A child has nothing
To eat but dust
Malnutrition
Kills her
Slowly

Meanwhile
In South East London
A teething child
With colic
Knows only
How to scream
Her father has had enough
On a trolley
In a hospital corridor
From internal injuries
This child dies
Slowly

Meanwhile
In New York State
A child of 15
Wipes the vomit
From her jumper
She gorges on
Gourmet cuisine
Supplied by her rich parents
Then in defiance
Forces herself to
Vomit
As a result of
Malnutrition her weak heart
Stops beating
She dies
Slowly

Meanwhile
In eastern Afghanistan
A child attends school
Her mother’s choice
For a better life
The children
Out playing
Are rounded up
And despite their age
And despite
Their pleading
This child is butchered
And dies
For religious reasons
Slowly

Meanwhile
In general
We care more
About or mobile phone
Reception
Or the taste of
Our Sea Bass
Than we do
For dying children
We may care
For our own
But every day
A child dies
Hardly noticed
By us
Slowly
