Racing Shadows (Co written with David MacLeod)

I could have been basking in all of the glory.
In first place, on the winners podium
You cheated, you stole my place
I am forced into second, behind you
Covering me I am cast in your shadow
No light on me I’m now always in the dark.

"I'll always be by your side" you promised.
But not like this. THAT WAS MY VICTORY!
I am so much more worthy than you,
you know it well, you see it clearly,
that's why you're so pleased to stand there
You'll always see it, the judges never will,
Those that judge don't see.

You crossed the line this time
It’s not like you haven’t crossed it before
I believed those lying pools in your eyes
I was completely a fool
The pools cannot lie
Deep down I knew, I knew the lie
Heart broken, I bowed my head, ignoring it

They say I should forgive you for everything
They say that shows true love
But if I lie down with a dog
I become no more than a bitch in heat
I must be worth more than that Surely even in your eyes

You held me close, but let me go even further.
Pushed me away whilst commanding me to stay.
I did as instructed, I protected your honor,
Ignoring my own. Held deep in your shadow
Stood by the behavior I could never condone.
But I have this fear of being alone

You can’t live in the shadow of another
I’m not a slave; I am not even your significant other,
I was meant to be your number one in all things
But now I must fly solo and into the light
I need out of the shadows and into the bright
I need the freedom to see and be seen
For once I will be first past the post
It’s such a pity you won’t be there
to share it with me.
