[2015] Disappointment

Rub more salted earth
into these open wounds

I'll oblige by biting down hard
on withered olive branches
while you continue to apply
your special brand of ointment

Amidst the dusty dunes accumulating
due to your scorched earth policies
I aimlessly wander the arid seas
left with little choice but to embrace
what would invariably be your gift to me

Disappointment

I considered you one of my peers
I considered you as I would a friend
Strung along for so many years
mislead by this meandering mirage
until the very end, all of my trust
misspent

It was all in my head
You were never really there
Now I see through the invisible flames
dancing in the empty desert air
to what I alone must face
what you could only spare for me
---your enduring legacy

Disappointment
