This is What Happened

I watched as these guys,
Were giving this girl,
A really bad time.

It had gone past,
Simple teasing,
Had taken on,
An edge.

It made me uncomfortable;
I couldn’t imagine,
How she felt.

I walked up to her,
Took her by the hand,
Quickly kissed her cheek,
Said,
How incredible it was,
To see her,
After all this time,
Steered her,
Inside the cafe,
I had just left.

Inside I ask her,
If there was someone,
She could call.

She was nearly in tears,
Nodded her head,
Yes;
Said,
That one,
The guy in the jacket,
Was her date,
Met him online,
Thought she knew him;
She was wrong.

They followed us in.

Steered her to a booth.

Ordered coffee for two;
Two pieces of pie.

Chatted about,
Catching up,
About old times.

They were watching.

I took out my phone,
(Made a bit of a show of it),
Dialed.

She looked questioningly at me.

First thing I said into the phone,
“We have a problem here,
Some guys are bothering,
This young woman.”

They left the cafe,
Running.

Gave my phone to her,
She told the person,
About what had happened,
Including the name,
He had given her.

She looked questioningly at me,
I told her to call someone,
Roommate,
Parent,
Girl friend,
Someone.

Right then,
She needed,
Someone she knew,
Not a stranger,
She had just met,
In the dark,
Outside a cafe,
Even if he had,
Been nice to her,
Helped her out.

She needed,
Someone she knew,
Someone she could,
Completely,
Trust.

Police came,
Her girl friend came.

She told her story.

I told mine.

Everyone left.

Never saw her again.
