We Chased the setting sun

We chased the setting sun
a day of friends and children
fading in the east
a cosy meal,crammed
in groups of six
a tiny pub and laughter
ringing in our ears
a medley now feeding memory,
olives bread and oil to dip
a communion to celebrate
baptism and renewed faith.
A sunny day a happy day
acquaintances refreshed
past regrets forgot within
the stone of centuaries.
Oak to seal the roof
chestnut benches and silent organ.
Clear water to refresh.
We chased the setting sun
day of friends more lasting
than the sun more worth than
the gold of  golden eve.

Here I write in the morning light
another child in october
perhaps again to meet in the
self same church within the
stone of centuaries, native chestnut
silent organ to speak again
the again of psst years
tomorrows of the future
Aconites beside the path
daffodils in hedge row lanes
sparrow-hawks survey the pastures
as the sun sinks low another day.
a day of friends and children
others to follow,dawns to rise
evenings set as we chase
again a race we cannot win
each day we try,happy losers
chasing the setting sun.
