in soundless words

You were the textbook of my synthesis
enamel-satin dream hordes
running into empty space
leaving me alone in the eye
of an endless universe

I lived like a trio of personalities
and you pulled the pieces of me apart
until I couldn’t pull myself back into
who I really am

Did you dream of my response
to your screaming silence?

In technicoloured black and white
we built wordless expressions between us
like decomposing napkin art
nailed to the barn walls
blown away in the wind
of tomorrow’s torrential rain

I cried elm trees into being
on your departure
imagining they could hold your memory
that still tastes like the last gherkin in the jar
salty and bittersweet down to the last bite
