Lost In The Art Of Washing My Hands

With a sigh I turn the faucet on
I play with the knobs to get
the utmost perfect temperature

Only then do I fully put my hands
Under the water knowing I only have
20 long seconds to get the steps right

I wet my wrists, hands and fingers
I get every inch wet with the water
Then I press the lever to get soap

I sigh for the second time as
I lather my wrists, hands and fingers
I wash the lather in between my fingers

And make sure I have washed them
For twenty second I sing the ABC's twice
Out loud I sing to myself;

now I know my abc's next time won't you sing with me
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y (and) z
now I know my abc's next time won't you sing with me

Then I with my nails against the palm
of my other hand, I gently rub my nails
Against my flesh to get rid of any dirt

All the while making sure to keep my hands
Below my elbows and my finger tips pointed down
I never touch the inside of the sink at any time

I then rinse my hands, leaving behind no soap
And absolutely anything else that might be on my hands
I grab three clean paper towels and dry my hands

A third time I sigh to myself as I crush the paper towels
I then throw the wet towels away into the trash
After that I turn off the faucet with a fourth paper towel

I look at the clock and try not to cry
I had run out of testing time...
I had failed the hand washing test to become a CNA...
