blue dress girl

so I was at a dance at the Union League Club. this was
in the days when I lived only to dance, you know what I
mean. I had natural rhythm & studied the intricacies of
the popular moves. the girls appreciated my ability, &
I never got turned down.

dancing to a steady spin of cool tunes, Springsteen,
Stones, Aretha’s ‘Chain of Fools.’ I glance at the chairs
by the wall, girl in a blue dress, watching me. okay, fine,
I keep dancing. check out the wallflower gallery again,
she’s staring dead at me. dance after dance, she sits
there alone, watching me.

after awhile, my buddies & I are hitting the punch, making
slurs about the hot babes, how we’ll get in their pants later.
jock talk. I get tapped on the shoulder, it’s the blue dress girl.
‘would you dance with me?’ she says, kinda shy-like.

I say, ‘no, I don’t like this song.’ & I turn back to my buddies,
but I can feel she’s still there, so I look at her. I thought she
was gonna spit in my face. ‘it’s got nothing to do with the song.’
so she shoots me down with that, then walks away. okay,
screw it, chick’s crazy.

the guys continue their punk talk, but I’m off their wavelength.
I know, I know, I was a callous jerk, I had to find her & apologize.
I searched the hall & asked around: blue dress, long brown hair.
but nobody, absolutely nobody, recalled her.

I went outside, looked up & down the dark street. nothing. it
was like she never existed. & thus ends another weepy tale.
I never knew where she came from or where she went back
to. she was gone.

you know, you get one chance in life.
one f*ckin chance…
