smidgens of leftover

walking away

This reads like a train of thought for the wait, ending in the let down. There's self doubt. "Did you say the day / to be today." You check your watch or calendar, and you got it right. It's the one not having come. Still sad, even if the mistake was entirely not yours. The last line reflects stark disappointment. Really fine job.
