Signs of Life
Under the bridge, hedgerow discovered,
a zebra with her ageing stripes, crossing
the road, unnoticed, forgotten signs with
narrow roads too cosy for two. Curtsy and bow,
practiced till turning green, giving way to
the empty road.
Toad crossing beware upon mud splattered
sign, conjuring up mythical creatures, beasts
of the forest, witches brew. Cottages full or
empty, family or holiday guest, awaiting lazy
cat, stretches and stares indignantly, and you
are? do you have food?
Eggs for sale, on display to help yourself if
honesty prevails, leave payment, box provided.
Flowers and shrubs colourful on bordering tarmac,
tired grey, ready to attack in slow advance
formation, no weeding out here.
A sign at last, about dogs and ducks, faded,
converted, lonesome dove nesting home to
roost and raise a family or holiday retreat.
Fields returning with yellow seed, twisting
dirt roads, single file, no more signs, just
wild life.
