At The Death of Summer

In the first Autumn’s breeze
The touch of chill creeping by me
Dying leaves are falling
At the death of summer

Why did it take so long?
You’ve been gone far too long

The roses wither in death’s embrace
In morbid grace the world and the face
Opens the door for the coming doom
To release the moon upon the tomb

The whiskey and the burning of leaves
The wailing trees and the mourning eaves
Desperation in those lonely nights
Where candles light the sickly delights

When I reach for you
I find an empty bed
Cold and bare
And the flickering of fire
Holds the shadows to me

Tell me where you have gone
You’ve been gone for far too long

On the gray skies is a swinging rope
I cannot cope with the death of hope
Empty bottles are my only friends
A sloppy grin in the face of sin

I openly dread the coming feast
Unified speech according to each
But I feel empty, alone and dead
When those said speeches invade my head

In the first Autumn’s breeze
Pour a burning shot just for me
To warm these weary bones
At the death of summer
