transmogrification denied

You talk to me like Iím someone
when I spend most of my time
feeling like Iím no one

And Iíll admit, I liked your caution
the dance of distance in the activation
of our familiarity
because I have the unfortunate habit
of falling right in
and losing myself in the undertow
though I donít yet know you well enough
to call this love

We are music and poetry
and I can still remember the first time
I wanted to reify your soul
into words
like a butterfly pinned to a corkboard
though youíve never been mine to pin down
or put on a pedestal for my own gain

Youíve always said art
should be free
