a name at the end of the alphabet

You act like you know me
because my name grew up in your bones
and your name grew up in mine
but it’s been a long time
since we’ve been close

Those days have faded
from our respective memories
and when I look at you
all I see now is the mirror
of your judgement
and the ghost of a black eye
you once gave me
my nails leaving a sky of bruises
in your back

I’m not a child though you treat me
like the teen people still mistake me for
and I somehow lose my womanhood
in your presence
as petulant as a child pulling a face
behind your back because I don’t like
what you have to say
never mind that it’s your wrong
and it’s my life pulled out of the top hat
like a deformed rabbit to poke fun at

Blood has never flowed thicker than water
and I can still count the ways of all our wrongs
tainting all the good times I’m sure we had
if only I could recall them from the abyss
of memory

You act like you know me
because my name grew up in your bones
and your name grew up in mine
but it’s been a long time
since we’ve been close
and when you stare down your height at me
with your condescending air
like you’re better than me
for all the letters of the alphabet
ending with your name
I wonder how we ever could have been
