"Encouragement"
The need to share these words
It shakes me, causes a stir
As I sit by a campfire
Adoring this young group of strength
This, their big Ranch adventure
While destiny lay covered by shadows
The light of a long life shaded
By terminal diagnosis in youth
Most will not live beyond their teens, but
Watch these youngsters closely
You'd never guess their fate
They share, relate, uplift
The emotions of every witness
Are lifted as these brave spirits
Give their all, pressing onward
Until the flame flickers
Just before midnight
Eyelids weighted
Rest required
Zzz
Awake early the next morn
Eager to meet the new day
Breakfast is served in variety
Some eat well, others pick
Parents and Ranch-hands spur them on
ATV and horseback riding trails await
All smiles and giggles
Squeals of laughter abound
This is perspective
It is joyous to participate
Assist
Attempt to inspire
Encourage
Day two
Sunlight fades
You would know
My place is to assist
But
I am not
The inspiration
Nor the encouragement
It shakes me, causes a stir
As I sit by a campfire
Adoring this group
Who constantly show
Strength in spirit
Inspirational
Gifts on display

great writing VP....
i do understand how you feel...over the years i've been a carer with 2 buddhist hospice services....
i felt honoured to be amongst these people of all ages at this time of their journey...they are inspirational....

I am not surprised you *get this* with a personal reference.
They are definitely inspirational.
I wrote this and, "Ambassadors" while volunteering
at two weekend retreats hosting separate groups.
Though they be different, they are much the same.

...it's as if they're giving you encouragement, strengthening your spirit, Vegas. The laughter and joy in those precious moments around the campfire, horseback riding, etc... are moments that they will never forget.....and you are a part of them. Indomitable. Perhaps, this is the word that best describes the human spirit, especially in children. Or, mayhap, love. I chose that other first because it is so easy to forget all that love encompasses and is.
You are in such an incredibly unique position. You see with clarity the vibrancy of life and living, the abundant strength to be found and the heartbreaking fragility inherent to it. And, through it all, you also stand witness to abundant courage and perseverance and joie de vivre.
Your cup runneth over, luv... :-*
