Mercy After
Death is a woman.
She cuts from the cloth of time
the shroud of kings and waits
counting each grain, each day
until
the last one falls.
Hourglass curves flow,
a granular avalanche.
Whose eyes watch them?
While steel blades swing
and ropes bind and pull,
men roar, the blood pours —
the life sparks are dulled
to sand.
The last grain falls.
Soft tumbles
into triple weaves.
Whose hands wove them?

"Death is a woman..." I
must say, THAT was not only very powerful as an opening
but damned if I can't say I could define it better... Astounding spill my friend!

Thank you, Poetik. The opening was inspired in the oddest place, but that's another story...

The grains never run out, they recycle. Excellent work, Mike.

Re: Mercy After
The profundity of this piece grows with each reading, Atakti, luv :-*. I have found that to be so with more than one of your works...
Mayhap, something in your works fosters growth within the reader, sparks awareness. I know not, but I feel enriched for reading them.
Thank you, luv. :-*

Ah, but there is mercy. Death is only doing her job and we would be worse off if she didn't. Killing on the other hand, seems to fall to humans' hands.

What is a writer without good readers? Any other thoughts you care to share are always refreshingly welcome!
