papaver somniferum

started out a seedling
laying amongst others cold in the kitchen drawer
a young slim man took it and planted it
with a dusty watering can and soil

and those arms and those legs stretched out in the sunshine
ducking for the rain
he checks again and the petals are smiling
aware someone acknowledges them

the winter came - flower frightened
and the man checked the stem and the leaves
petals fallen and body strivelled
like a unborn ungrown fetus

he brought his sketch pad out to the garden
to greet the frost
and he drew with broken pencil the flower but a slick
and weary seedy papaver somniferum-

until he chopped the head off and used it for heroin
even in my metaphors the man abuses this floral mind
