"Heritage"
One-hundred-sixty-six years ago my great-great-grandfather, Daniel, departed his homeland of Scotland.
He and his clan were members of the much larger, Clan MacPherson. They occupied an area of, "A' Ghàidhealtachd." Gaelic for, "The place of the Gaels." Scots refer to it as, "the Highlands."
Daniel and his bride Sarah (Gaelic given name - Sorcha - meaning bright or clear) had established a home just northeast of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles.
He made the voyage to America and settled near the town of Appomattox, Virginia. There he toiled as a blacksmith, saving every possible penny over a two year period before sending for his lovely Sarah.
During the next five years they welcomed a son and daughter. According to historical accounts, they thrived, purchased land, built a modest home, and bred horses.
Prior to the attack on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina the family sold their homestead in Appomattox.
As the Civil War began, Daniel and family were establishing a new stake in Southern Ohio. He soon would be dressed as a soldier for the Union Army.
Nearly four years, and many battles, later Daniel safely returned home to Sarah and their two children.
Their son, my great-grandfather, grew to a stature of 6' 6". A certain anomaly for the time.
Dad chose my name to honor his tall grandfather.

Ah huh…so that’s where your 6’4 came from, it’s hereditary I see. :)
Back then, men were built a little stronger; their struggles came in droves, survival instincts where daily tested and family was the only thing that was important to them, the only thing that motivating them. Evident in this history you’ve shared, Vegas! We learn so much from a person’s heritage.
Scotland has always been a country I wanted to visit, I’ve always found it captivating and intriguing, much like this ink.
I see why your close friend loved your family's history...Xo

Yes, Ms Rain. I come from tall, sturdy stock.
Your words regarding struggles and family are so true.
I visited Inverness in the summer of 2006. Drove south on A82 along Loch Ness, south of Glengarry Castle to the junction of A86 at Spean Bridge. The area of my ancestors.
My desire to return is immense.
He loved to look at the photographs from this trip, asking me to retell the adventure many times. He would burst into laughter when I would remind him of my Grandfather's favorite quip,
"There are but two groups of people in this world.
Thems that Scots, and thems that wish they were."
Always appreciate your insightful words, Ms Rain.

Your meaningful comments are always encouraging, Sweetness.
Thank you.
The fog is beginning to lift. I now am actually able to celebrate his graduation without getting emotional. Though, certain I am, settling his estate and organizing his treasures will bring another wave.
Your luv is sensed and deeply appreciated.
