Image for the poem You do not always need me

You do not always need me

You do not always need me:

The first time I heard you cry, I had to sigh with relief and cry laughing
The first time I seen your unfocused eyes fixed on me, laying in my arms
You were so content with me, and I felt so many wonderful things
I held you all night, I could not sleep, and I just watched you
I put you at my left breast, and as you fed I watched your innocence and purity shine
I felt like a star feel from the heavens, and made you specifically to be mine
I watched you grow, and all the things you have come to learn, is more than I will know
I remember when you not only needed me but wanted me to
Your eyes would search for me, watching you accomplish the task, you were attempting
You would smile, and so eagerly say, mommy, watch this, watch me, I can do it, I can do it
Son I watched you, I smiled and I am so proud of everything I see you do
I just miss back then, during the time when, you not only needed me, but wanted me to
Now you’re growing and I say I just want to hold my baby, it frustrates you, it’s time consuming
But son what it does to me, is it reminds me, of when I first heard you, cry and I held you
But you say, mom, I will always need you, and son I know you do, and I am always here for you
When you were so little, and I looked at you, I could see it in your eyes
You not only needed me, but wanted me to
It was all in the way you looked at me, I miss that look you had in your eyes now you need me
You do not always want me
