chicks and cuddlings

Maria was telling me today
how her dad brought home

a hundred chicks and ducklings.
He put newspaper down in a bedroom

they all lived in there
it was a most wonderful sight
for a day.

In the morning
There was no longer any trouble
with the children
not waking up
In the morning

as they all rushed
to see the room full
of fluffy yellow chicks

In the morning,
The paper needed changing
and a dead chick
here and there.

Her dad put out water in bottle caps
but they were not shallow enough
a fair number of them choked
on drinking the water
from the bottle caps.

In just a few days
there were only
two ducklings left.
