It's a very interesting take on the picture.  It's actually quite fascinating how one girl is uninterested and the other one seems curious.
You've captured it in a capsule in the following lines:

Dreams and fears,
death on the cusp,

I believe all three were painted as transgender
how we as a human species still have hangups
about how another human should act or behave
what's perceived as normal in society

Nothing is as it seems...we all have our secret lives and some have the courage to live them out in the open. Death is always on the cusp which makes it all the more important to find and be our true selves.
