I'd Have

I could have been the one that you were looking for
Just so you know
I'd have gone through whatever needed to be done
To get through to you
I'd have given my best when you were at your worst
And put you first
I'd have done all I could to comfort your soul
When it hurts
But you didn't want it
And you never will
No matter the emotion
That I let spill
All you ever wanted
Was to kill
And you did
Now you don't even feel
Isn't that right?
Just a mess of memories forgotten and overlooked moments
Easier to push aside the past with no concern of the future
Pleasantries in the present just to maintain civility
Meaningless interactions with a point to simply remind
That you only want me when I'm needed
I've been okay with that since I said "no more"
And I appreciate the constant refresh of who you really are
It's just a disappointing cycle to watch
And sad to know that I was a part of
The problem lies in your inability to change
And to see all you've lost
Not to mention what you'll continue to lose
With no learning time will tick by fast
And by the time you feel the impact of hard hitting truth
When the pain of someone you actually care for takes a piece of you with them
It'll be too late
I knew to set boundaries and cut you off once I saw the reflection of the real you
But not everyone is like me
Most will get themselves caught up in your sweet words and fun persona
Before it becomes too much and they drop you
Leaving you fallen, broken
And you know what it's like, you've been there before
I felt your pain, I did
But it's not enough to care
You know it and so do I
An unfortunate reality check you gave to me
And since I've cashed it, I haven't looked back
I just wonder if you wonder sometimes
And I don't know why, when the answer is clear
Blame it on my active mind and emotion laden heart
