I wanted to touch your demons and feel them tremble in fear of us

The wall shimmered in the twilight haze
and he seemed to fall into it
as though becoming one with the shadows
his darkening eyes evading mine for a burnt tree landscape
that we’d set fire to in our passions

The wind took on a voice of its own
spoke its own truths and lies alike
whispered life and death and rebirth into our souls
and left us untouched

His body spoke of heat and too many hurts
my body pressing against his
a lock and key, liberator and captor
to the sun-deprived sky behind

Cutting through our silence
our unspoken violence
I breathed my truth into his ear

“I want to watch the way you smoke a cigarette
as I breathe in the smoke from your lungs.
I want to be the reason you smile.
I want to be the reason you bleed.
I want to touch your demons
and feel them tremble in fear
of love.
I want to be
the only one.”

I never believed
we were never meant to be
