Yesterdays

Memories fill my head
Of the love we once shared
Am I wrong to want
To go back to that place?
A place where I'd
Often look out my window
To green grass
And rolling hills
Somehow signifying how
Happy we were

I long for the days
When packing a lunch
Before you went to work
Was a joy to me
Giving you a kiss
And sending you off
Was fulfilling to my being
Boring,mundane,and ordinary
That was us
And somehow it worked

But like the machine that
This was sometimes
The wrong buttons get pushed
Then all of a sudden
Nights of darkness
Took away my paradise
In the blink of an eye
My whistling trees stood still
Dark clouds hovered endlessly

No more will we
Laugh and embrace
Or enjoy a game on tv
Our children will only know
That dad is here
And mom is there
How my heart bleeds for them
They never asked for this
Who will make it right for them?

I had a hand in this
So my burden is
Stitched on my back
Like a scarlet letter
Never to be hidden
And remain my pain
Forever
