Dear Daughter

Dear Daughter,

I would like to start this poem off by saying I love you.
And I am sorry that this is the first poem I have wrote for you
And I’m sorry that this may be the first time you hear me on a stage
But I promise to make you proud
I promise that if after this day God no longer gives me breath
You will remember me
Not just by the soft kisses I place on your forehead
But by the words I conger in my head
I want you to know that you’re a blessing
Not one of those I’m glad I can keep my lights on kinda blessings
But one of those I’m so favored by God I woke up in the morning kinda blessings
Because the angels dance in your smile
Treading on the slick sparkling enamel
Making me proud as a mother just to see that you brushed your teeth today
Now that may sound funny
But your every waking moment of growing maturity reminds me
That I am guiding you on your path to greatness
That I am instilling in you the tools of a Proverbs 31 kind of woman
Even with the smallest lessons like never put your elbows on the table
The please and thank yous are good enough to change my day
Baby you are my greatest accomplishment
You are destined to change the world
And I promise to teach you
That everything that glitters is not gold
The grass is not always greener on the other side
The easy path is never the right one
That anything worth having is worth fighting for
And the most important
No man will love you like God and no woman will love you like mama
As you grow older these things will make sense
But for now
I will keep you
Tucked inside doll houses
Painting rainbows on your fingertips
Walking in mommy’s high heel
But never in my foot steps
Because a greater path was paved just for you
Before I knew you
God wrote your name in the stars
An angel amongst the worldly
I am inspired by you
Because on days when clouds cover your mother you are strong enough to pray for me as I have prayed for you
And when you can't understand my mood
You softly whisper our favorite gospel tune
I hope that one day I can be as strong as you
My child
You are my greatest blessing
I LOVE YOU
MOM
