I Won't Do You No Harm

Customs change and traditions evolve
and so in expression with others many things to solve

Some women that are unattached do take offense
bothered and insulted when a guy wants to know
how such a lovely lady has that single road to hoe

It can be instructive to know what others have done wrong
yet their negative reaction to the question can be so strong

Never an insult is meant in my inquiry
yet they look like they want to hang me from a tree
these days there are many reasons someone may not have on a ring
so looking at the finger may not tell a single thing

And it is not like I am asking a woman's age
rather I am pondering if there is an open page
one that I may write my name upon
are the effects from the past really gone?

So I say ladies when a question about being single appears
you can put aside any of the cautious fears
either way you answer I will still be polite
just wanting to know if you are free another night
