"Because You Can Say It Doesn't Mean You Have To"

I truly understand the passage of time when it is
people more the a generation younger I have to relate
now resolved to the nature of my fate

Feel it when trying to be kind in helpful comment
reaction is coldest of shoulders
as if my suggestions might make them seem less bolder

Common language everyday usage
of words like "bitch, ass," and the like
over kill of redundancy maybe I should just take a hike

Perhaps I am mired in the days of old
John Wooden, Pete Seeger, Paul Robeson were my guides
now okay throw obscenities to and fro and side to side

A harsher world the youth today see around them
even if that statement is true
no excuse for personal accountability in words that are used

Now to dramatize a point back in the day
one here or there was accepted and fine
with school kids passing to classes I hear it with every other line

So far from being the speech police
not suggesting any censorship be sought
rather a plea to civility and a peace that can never be bought
