My Mind Is My Enemy?

My mnd is my enemy, I thought this to be true,
At least that is what the doctors said,
And if not for the medications,
I would one day be found dead.

Being tired of taking medication,
I decided to try a stroke of the pen,
Hoping that would help ease up,
The demom that visit me time and again.

I am new to this thing called poetry,
Don't know if I am using the right format,
So if you have to criticize,
I hope you do it with tact.

I hope someone out there will see the therapy,
That the stroke of the pen is producing,
For it is helping me ease the memories,
Of holding that shotgun between my knees.

Being medical retire from the military,
At a very, very young age,
My mind became my enemy,
And while most men were working, I was in a rage.

An idle mind is the devil pit,
And the pit had me at center stage,
Just sitting around waiting for the 1st,
To be release from the cage.

I was heading for Boot Hill,
On a runaway train with bottle in my hand,
Drowning out the voices and the memories,
Of when my son was killed.

Then a strange thing happen,
Liquor no longer did the trick,
So I when to the V A,
And told them I was tired of being sick.

They locking me down on the 4th floor,
And it was the best thing that ever happen to me,
They promised to bind the demon up,
Which alcohol could do no more.

Thank God for leading me to AA and sobriety,
To a fellowship that understood my pain,
I found out I had Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome i.e. PTSD,
And that my mind is no longer my enemy.
So I live one day at a time with humility.
