empathizing with the lunatic

it has to be so horrible
to not be able to stand
to live in your own skin

to wake in misery,
down some pills
and try to suffer
the day again,

over and over again
it never seems to improve
no one wants to be near you
because you are utterly miserable

and so incredibly self absorbed
that it seems all you can think about
is your own endless pain

you don't understand that if you
pull your head out of your ass
and stop thinking about me, me, me
every second of the day

the pain of your past
might seem further away

you desperately want
to end your life
but something stops
you every time,

your narcissism perhaps
or your cowardice
imagine this:

you've lived an empty life of agony
and you feel absolutely nothing
for other human beings except
for anger, hatred and contempt

this is why you have nothing,
this is why you are suffering
because without compassion, empathy

you will always be a hollow shell,
filled with all of those murderous voices
tortured by your self-made hell
