ode to a sex survey

Most recent major survey in Britain, carried out by University College London, revealed 57 per cent of men and 37 per cent of women aged 65 to 74 in the sample had had sex in the past year.  One tabloid paper’s report was headed “50 shades of greyer”, with first bullet point “We’re having sex later in our life (in our 70s)”.  This is how older couples might greet the findings.)

This is a poetic bouquet
To those who did the sex survey
From we, whose hair’s going/gone grey.

We may be 50 years greyer
Than today’s later-teenager,
But, we see, we have a prayer.

It comforts older woman, man,
To read at that age they still “can” –
Without need of family plan.

We may not “do” in quantity,
But we’ve polished on quality,
Headstart through seniority.

There’s no way better to get warm,
Than closeness of another’s form,
In a couple’s domestic dorm.

(Which might help out the heating bills
When we face up to winter’s chills!)
Darbys and Joans are Jacks and Jills.

Youngsters may find us a surprise.
Don’t bother sending us replies;
We’ll be having our “beddy-byes”!
