Uncertain night
The woodland sweet with rain
ferns lace the ground
stretching far as one can see
beneath pines and birch
silent as they drink away
the three week drought,
turgid leaves and thorny brambles
crowd each in healthy competition
rabbits cross in white tail panic
new burrows every day
badger setts rising nightly,
none seen as we walk by. . . .
waiting for the uncertain night
its owls and fox and lampers.
Sweet rain and song birds
anonymous in diversity
hides the truth beneath the ferns,
each moment lived as if the last
seconds more than minutes
do not count the hours
days beyond your call,
The future ? dare to ask.
