Sad Little Square

Main Street should be the heart of the town
The oldest and most preciously preserved
Yet the old square where the first court house was
Is ignored and abandoned; no longer used

The stately white building was used for the school district
After, of course, the court house was moved
Now even that purpose is gone and away
To the corner in a renovated Piggly Wiggly store

The rest of the square is quite desolate and sad
The tarnished woods and stones speak
They echo of past important usefulness
Now the focus is on the new part of town

I hate to see empty buildings just sitting there
What was once a post office, library, or restaurant
Now just an ignored vacant relic of earlier days
With faded FOR SALE signs hanging by one side

It pains me to see these lonely, empty structures
Just sitting there and rotting away, day by day
I wish I had money to buy all of these 20 places
Scattered all through the older parts of town
