Pathe News

I never read the Sundays, watch TV instead
twice the price of Mondays four times the size,
hysterical and biased half truths
even in the heavies.

I can watch the world go by in comfort
like the Regal of my youth its Art Decor and concrete.
Pathe-News and cockerels, crowing black and white,
spy films, tolling bells in Spain, all to entertain.
One and nine I think it was, girlfriend at my side
at the back beyond the ushers' beams, coats upon our laps
hands nowhere to be seen, leave before the ‘King'.

Three hours luxury, thick carpets for our feet
central heating, chairs with padded arms
Gold lace curtains ‘EXIT’ orange lights,
then home to frugal furniture, bedroom cold and damp
sirens, drones and guns ‘Who got it last night?’
Impatient wait for Friday night to dream again,
‘Gone with the Wind‘ four hours,
Pathe-News . . . . . ten minutes.
