the open door

Dimness in the church
light filtered windows
windows filtered light
blues and red golden
golden red and blue
heavy dimness cool
cool and heavy eyes
to stare beyond
beyond the beyond
I cannot see
the dimness of the church
martyrs saints swords
their cruciforms
heavy dimness cool
yellow light of candles
melting the gloom
shaking shadows in
the breeze that through
the heavy door and latch
speaking of sun and hail
wakes the martyrs as
saints lie down their swords
to rust and corruption
the light of yellow candles
pools of wax flowing
escaping the flame
stains the heavy stone
to soak deep indelible
as waking martyrs
to sleep no more
shield their eyes
and disbelieve
blues and reds and golden
filtered light stained
by leaden glazing
butterflies flutter
lost in the distorted light
of the glaziers ancient skill
banning sun as children play
bronzed and glowing in
the breeze that enters
through the open door.
