imagine a boy
and a girl

who are not a boy and girl at all.

she spent her years
courting intelligence
and courage.

she delved
into lonely places and found
the only loneliness she felt
was in denial
of her splendor.

everyone despised her
for her innocence and drive,

yet she reminded them- I know it doesn't look this way-
but haven't you always wanted it to?

he wept for the world
beat his breast
and did his best

to stay fixated
on the next
shift.

hungry for submission
but unwilling to settle for less than
a sweeping attempt at perfect timing-

Solitude
was punishment
to neither.

In thirty seconds
(perhaps a little less)

their reflections ceased to be
a rallying point
of improvement.

Light
refracting
Light;

potential imperfection
complementing years of separate
searching-

a subtlety spoiled with words.

it was only long enough
for dalliances
quick and deep.

he penetrated my being
with inarticulate precision


a paradox
pondered
and perfected

a girl
who despised the thought
of needing to be saved

is still allowed to find
prince charming

but the charming part
is they way he leads with his heart
