For Sophie * Tá buille nua le mo chroí, agus is breá liom é
My darling
it's almost like you robbed the gods
of all their beauty
when you passed through their nebulae
on your way to bless us
this world lost some of its shadows
the moment you screamed out your first thoughts
and brought the tears from your mother's eyes
and princess
it was no surprise for me
to feel your tiny hand wrap around my finger
but when I whispered your name
and your eyes opened briefly
to compliment the small curled up smile
that came, then lingered for a poet's lifetime
you took the breath of me
but in reality, I'd have gladly given it anyway
girl
when you're a little older
we'll both hunt hidden treasures
that fill pages
and we'll spend an age finding out what happened next
to this one or that one
or jump on a ship that's on its way
past suns and moons
but Sophie
when it rains, and all you feel is wet
remember you've me for shelter
and all the other hearts
that beat a little bit harder from the sight of you
or better yet
we'll both go stamping in the puddles
and we'll shout at the grey clouds
then I'll put you sitting on my shoulders
so the sun can hear us
when we call it out to play
and finally
please promise me, you'll always be Sophie
never less than who you are
no matter who it is that begs it of you
you're no one's trophy, nor should you ever be
or ever feel a hand strike in anger
or walk blindly
while you have me to guide you
because I can swear an oath with ease
that these two hands that hold you
will plough through any man, beast or god
should you need them to
*There's a new beat to my heart, and I love it

simple here mate. very beautiful and heartfelt, laid well enough to indulge in pure sentiment. Loved it man, and congrats!
"then lingered for a poet's lifetime"
yes sir, just awfully adorable, and sincere and strong enough to stand it up tall.
further note, should ya have a lady friend good with the thread and needle, you should embroider that into a blanket or something, have those protective and adoring words wrapped around her

oh Barron of light
Thanks man, I've been attempting this since Monday, tried a few different angles, complex, too clever for my own good type stuff, but I wanted something that read special to me and simple done the trick.
I can see maybe a bit of excess rhyme might have to be tamed and maybe a couple of lines can be cut/ shortened but I'm happy enough and happier that it can give off what I'm feeling.
I thank you good sir, for taking the time to read this, it's a lot longer than my normal, and for laying your thoughts down.
That's a good idea 'bout the embroidery, lot of words there , it'll take a bit of charming

From beginning to end Lepperochan this was magic. You are truly in touch and have your priorities straight...and, I'm sure, you had trials getting to this point of being in touch!
Again, this was beautiful man....

Humbled it is I am to have teased so many good words from your fingertips.
ah yes, trials and errors both my friend, which in effect gives me more experienced thoughts to lend the tiny ears in question, and mend any broken feelings when the time comes. :)
good to see you here man, thanks for the words

I'm so very grateful for your advice on the idea of this (or lack thereof). as you know, I was quite lost in the swell of it all. clearly you should be bottled and distributed worldwide, and it should be called Hemi's Head. (though I fear the gay community might get the wrong idea ..or even start a new technique)
either way man, many thanks for everything, and for dropping by and leaving your thoughts

Oh you big softie. You've been hiding behind all this talk about banks and governments. It is a worthwhile thing when you cut loose and let the positive emotions free. It is not an easy thing and it takes some skill to keep it under control. You pull it off very well. For me maybe the "oh" leading in is too much. The rest settles down to a more intimate message from you to her. That is the only thing I have in the way of a suggestion, the rest would just be to repeat the positive things already been said about it.

I agree about the oh at the start, definitely overkill there, so its been unceremoniously wrenched out and thrown to the slag heap.
haha, I'll give you an idea 'bout the mixed feelings I've been having. the doors to the maternity ward were locked from the inside so you buzz and a nurse releases the lock.
I got there one night after 12am knowing no nurse was gonna buzz me in and hoping some visitor would do it manually for me. when a visitor did it, I thanked him, then went into a rant about safety and how his act of kindness could have cost a terrible price.
..yeah, I know :)
anyway man, I appreciate your words and the time you take constantly to help and encourage me and folk in general.
so thank you kindly good sir

yes, I can hear cups of coffees falling out of hands in shock all over the globe, it's true; I am now a granddad

A delicately lovely scribe, to be certain,Eamonn...such a touching, thoughtful gift to your granddaughter.

Re: For Sophie * Tá buille nua le mo chroí, agus is breá liom é
Eamon, I stumbled across this gem in a reading list and was totally blown away. A father's love for a daughter or granddaughter is one of vulnerability, instinctive and protective, and you find yourself overwhelmed by these emotions the instant you hold that child in your arms. I guess it's the closest a father will ever get to understanding a mothers's emotional bond towards her child.
You've captured the raw emotions perfectly, enough to make me smile and appreciate how lucky I am to have a daughter. This poem is timeless, beautifully written and a gift to your granddaughter the day she can comprehend how in an instant, she changed the lives around her.
