The Ice in the River
- The Ice in the River -
To bargain with darkness: but at what cost?
Ask thyself this, oh child born of man!
Hast thou stood overlooking the rivers?
Behold, they flow steady and strong!
Oh, proud child, hast thou become so lost?
Look ye to the river, look to the sand!
For there the ice melts yet still it shivers.
It knows nothing of right and wrong!
The ice in the river watches men at war,
As they clash and battle over thrones.
The ice remembers what men do not!
For in their greed and they covet more,
Men fall so low that gone are their bones.
And men fight on, to time giving no thought.
The skies grow cold as winter comes along,
Only to give way to the gold of summer!
And, the children of man forget the frost.
For the heat makes them remember it not!
Heat of battle or heat of love, right or wrong,
The chaos of life makes a man a mummer!
In madness he goes, oft to death’s cross.
Crucified by forgetfulness, lost in thought!
And thou come to me, and ask me of things,
Which are beyond the ken of the sages.
Do ye not remember all things have price?
I have walked with wizards, dragons, kings,
And, seen the truth of Hell’s own rages.
But never once have I forgotten the ice!
It coats and covers those who are forsaken,
But I am found, a warrior queen proud!
My kingdom shall endure, like the rivers.
Golden as a crown, silver as the water!
Beyond the snow, beyond the fire, I awaken!
My roar is like the lion, fierce and loud.
The knights of my banner, their steel delivers.
I am Queen, I am Mother; I am Daughter!
The river winds on, the ice thaws at last,
But it always returns, in its’ rightful hour.
Rain becomes snow, all things shall renew!
Listen to the river, as it flows most fast,
A match for any steel in might and power.
Such is my glory, like dawn begetting dew!
To bargain with darkness: but at what cost?
Ask thyself this, oh child born of man!
Hast thou stood overlooking the rivers?
Behold, they flow steady and strong!
Oh, proud child, hast thou become so lost?
