L'OPTOMETRISTE
(Inspired by having had an eye test in 2008 at hands of a blonde French woman optician working in England.)
Arresting blue eyes, eyebrows thin,
Cheekbones high and porcelain skin,
Gold hair scraped back and bunched up behind,
Caressing Gallic accent, bedside manner kind,
Dainty nose, thin-painted lips and nails –
A belle of the land of onions, frogs and snails,
Taut flabless frame in a pinstriped suit,
Discreet white blouse, white shoes on bare foot.
A carer of the vision and a vision to behold
For many a patient, child, young adult to old.
If she caught the eye of Solomon the King,
Would he write her a song – or buy her a ring?
God bless her with patients godly and kind,
May her skill prevent others going blind.

Well written Solomon and great imagery of the lady. I always laugh when they get too close to my face, I really do try my best not to.

Can't remember laughing but she was quite stunning to one used to French people as being dark. (Didn't ask what part of France she was from but in hindsight think she may have been from Normandy where the locals are descended largely from Viking (Norman) settlers.) She had a striking accent which made me ask about it when she finished work on me. (I am used to talking to Germans.) I wrote about her in a letter to married friends in New Zealand, enclosing a drawing of her from memory! (The husband was an optometrist himself who had worked in same firm.)
