The Maze
Calm sky and deepening green
day transforms to night in the evening light
starlings on their way to roost,
panicked pigeons leaving phone lines
to hawks finding barn doors open;
cows kneeling against the breeze
lambs cuddle to their mothers.
All is still; still, hear the petals drop!
clouds, pink in the evening sun afraid to move,
time still as the watch ticks on.
Cows chomping on their cud all I hear.
Leaning on the gate I do not even think,
animal as the rest ,my needs the same.
I feel the hand that nature shares holding me,
decides my coming and my going.
Could I but lie with the sheep,
with them inherit the earth !
I am captive as the pigeons
predestined to fly, as I to walk
through natures maze, afraid to lose the way,
cry for help to escape the somber yew
when, had I but known,
that for which I craved,
within my reach, just around a corner.
