Homecoming
My Army wife
beloved partner
best friend
You stand beside me now
like you always have
since that day you fell
in love with your lieutenant
Throughout the decades
you have shared it all
Pinned on ranks
mess dress balls
sewn on patches
back porch haircuts
Quiet defeats
aching separations
joyous homecomings
and unseen wounds
All the while
my deep and whispered
wellspring of strength
always loving steadfast
never giving up on me
After these thirty years
of peace and war
salutes and sacrifice
this old soldier
comes home to you now
for the last time
love-struck
humbled
and grateful

Thank you so much. This one was hard to write because of the intense emotions I feel for my bride.

Mark I am kicking your butt, You made my makeup run!! This is so freaking beautiful and as I have always said, your wife Must be an awesome lady(of course she had to be a redhead)because she has a wonderful husband, who write her these exquisite pieces of his love and devotion. Danggit I want one like you! love ya bunches!

Careful Red, if you tell me that you'll wear thigh high boots while you kick me ... I will SO like it! Seriously, thanks so much. I worked on this poem during the weeks leading up to my retirement ceremony ... then I sprang it on her at the end of my closing remarks (ruined her makeup too.) I'm getting it professionally printed and framed so she can have it on her wall at work. Deb is the most amazing woman I have ever met and the love of my life - I am sure you two would hit it off. Love you too special lady!
