Letting You Go

I painted this picture of you in my mind
Of how it would begin and end
in a matter of time.

I played it all out inside my head
I wrote it in notes,
On paper it bled

I knew from the start how
it would be
You thought you owned it
but I held the key

To unlock what I wanted,
to hold the rest
safely tucked away
hidden behind my breast

Sometimes beating in rhythm
with your soul
And other times
not at all

You thought you were in control
of everything we had
The good times, the laughter, the holding me near,
We shared nothing that was bad

It was just always about you
and the things in your life
How you suddenly assumed
I wanted to be your wife

But I knew the story
better than you
If you looked close enough,
you would have realized it too

That even though you were
the first to say goodbye
I let you have that
For no other reason why

Except, just maybe it was better
coming from you
Cause I realized I was so much stronger
and I'd never break your heart in two.

But, this is what you do
The writing was on the wall
You told me all about it
Like I was not listening at all

So, I just let you think
you held all the cards in your hand
When losing you,
was always my plan.
