Independence Day

I'm going to close my eyes for a moment
Before I start to scream
In that time I will number
The shattered pieces that are building
The wall between you and me.

I will reclaim my independence
I will deem myself brave
It is too late for reliance
You punished too many mistakes
I cannot trust what you say.

I've learned words are just words
Even when the tone paints them true
Because acting is a skill
That deception likes to work through
So as I walk away remember
I tried my best to lift my head
Don't say I'm turning my back when
Faces have been replaced
With spit shined lies of happiness
And a false sense of nonconformity.

I will reclaim my independence
I will deem myself brave
It is too late for reliance
You punished too many mistakes
I cannot trust what you say-
Love is a clear cloud and misty breeze
Disquising fineprint bullshit requirements.

As my voice surges to your ears
I hope you close your eyes and see
That houses fall like frozen rainbows
When children are afraid to be human.

It would be insulting to sleep in the bed
That facilitated my childhood dreams
When you have taken my individuality away.

I will reclaim my independence
I will deem myself brave
It is too late for reliance
You punished too many mistakes
I cannot trust what you say
Don't look away or miss a moment
This is my independence day.

I'm going to close my eyes for a moment
You can't take this away
I am free from the burdens
You allowed me to carry.
