Lost and alone.
The road of life has been long.
I've known happiness.
I've known love.
All has led me to the man above.
Even still, I do not gain.
I may have known love,
But it's led to pain.
Heartache and heartbreak.
I've known them so long
my chest always aches.
I've known happiness.
I've known love.
And because of these, I also know pain.

Thanks. Story of my life. I try to have some kind of relationship and it always seems to get torn away and I'm always powerless to stop it. It's depressing.

Reminds me of CS Lewis' words (both IIRC) "pain is the price of being human" and "the only place to avoid the pains of love is the fires of hell"..
The last line of the first verse could be interpreted more than one way
All has led me to the man above.
Is it a man now dead (ie in heaven) or a figure of speech for God? (Winston Churchill sometimes referred to God as "the old man" when he was an older man himself)

It was in fact a reference to God. But I left it open like that for people who don't believe to interpret it how they choose with no judgement.

I do like the open-endedness of interpretation, I think it adds to the poem.
