Let Me Be A Tree

If ever I were given the chance to choose
something other than human I wanted to be
No doubt in my mind what I would pick
I would choose to become a tree

For even in tough circumstances
a tree always finds a way to survive
Some you may think will soon be dead
but somehow they manage to thrive

Plant a tree on the sharp slope of a hill
or even high up on a mountain’s side
It may end up bent in an awkward angle
but its will to live will not be denied

A tree never seems to let other things
block its path as it grows
Instead it will push them out of its way
if around them it cannot go

They won’t be fenced in by fences we build
at such useless obstacles they will just balk
And never think you’ll win the war that you wage
against that tree pushing up your side walk

Trees are only bidding their time
when every winter they seem to die
Spring rolls around and they awaken
Blooming branches raised up to the sky

Some trees flourish in the oddest places
just wherever their seeds have landed
If they can stretch for sunlight they’ll grow
their trunks becoming crooked or canted

What kind of tree I’d be is irrelevant
although I’d have flowers if I could
I’ve always thought the blooms lovely
on both the Magnolia and the Dogwood

So if I ever I am given the chance to choose
I want to be something resilient and strong
So just let me be a big old huge tree
I don’t think that choice could ever be wrong
