POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Born the year Kennedy was shot, and now sharing a birthday with 9/11, my poetry is always informed by truth and the need to communicate the human condition.
Freedoms
Freedoms
1.
every dick with a click
every twat with a tweet
joins the speeding bandwagon
of righteous opinion
such a clamour of chatter and indignation
drowns out the slow truth of free expression
2.
but what of our laws? For example
those against incitement and hate crime
maybe not every God is created equal in the sight of Man
3.
cartoonists die
so as terrorists too
can express their
freedom of speech
4.
muslims and jews
in the middle east are old news
when there’s...

Dark Day
The thaw did not break evenly
Shards of ice pierced my eyes
Players, disguised as tears of joy
The hurt bubbled on
Impure, volcanic mud
Lumps of lava impregnated with hate
Scolded into every thinking cell
I thought my mind may, literally, explode
New lambs bleat and starlings chatter
Heralding spring. Hope, excised by despair
It is a self-deception that winter had ended
Nothing ends, only abates, drops, lulls
Awakens
Rebirths
And so I cry my hot tears
I ask for forgiveness and I forgive
Such mundane lies, the...

Sentenced to Four Years for Aggravated Assault
Plain steps
Grey concrete smooth polished to look
Like marble
But they are not; nothing in this courtroom is real
I came here a Free Man
Under licence and bonded high, but free all the same
I chose to face my accusers
Had I have known the theatre was so drab
I would not have bothered
Reporters, local papers and one National
But a freelance, a local stringer
So no coverage guaranteed, where, where
Is the caring, the recognition, the notoriety
Don’t they know, I mean something!
How do you plead?
I don’t plead at all,...

Crossing the River Styx to the Kingdom of The Dead
Charon, his bony fingers stark
Asked would I be willing to strip
His tree of bark
It was a euphemism I do believe
And Charon was not Charon but Sharon
A Hairy Mary from Cell 26B
That’s what you get
When you steal a car
And steal a caravan too
Four months in hell
With a friend who is a friend indeed
A beast in search of a hole
That was the night I paid the Ferryman
And crossed the River Styx
To the Kingdom of the Dead
Asked would I be willing to strip
His tree of bark
It was a euphemism I do believe
And Charon was not Charon but Sharon
