POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I am very critical of my own work but I tend to love intensely, and writing is an emotional release and catharsis I can't seem to resist.
Incubus
He found her on a mound
of white satin, her feet
encased in scarlet ballet
slippers, the silk ribbons
crossed to her knees.
She drank in his scenery,
she was a child of obsession.
Inhaling smoke as if hungry
beyond sanity, she continued
to watch him, and he permitted
her this.
When he touched her, he did not
feel her skin, only her need:
gold-tipped bubbles frothing
in a glass of radiant wine.
He saw the scrim of fog
beneath her flesh, illuminated
by hanging scarlet lanterns.

Letter from a Lonely Ghost on Valentine's Day
I want to softly die today.
I yearn to softly sleep.
Your picture burns a flame in my heart.
This secret I softly keep.
I am so alone without you.
My heart, it burns with pain.
I am alone, so alone without your love,
and shall never see you again.
The knife awaits, its blade rings true
and sadness is my aid.
I'll put an end to your eyes in my head,
softly to rest I’ll be laid.
For my heart is dead, and soon at last
dead my body shall be.
I’ll follow your beautiful hands to the grave,
only you in my heart shall I see.
I yearn to softly sleep.
Your picture burns a flame in my heart.
This secret I softly keep.
I am so alone without you.
My heart, it burns with pain.
I am alone, so alone without your love,

Come Back to Me
Your face is with me wherever I go,
I miss you desperately.
I am empty without you, I fade into nothingness.
My love, come back to me.
My heart, it hungers for your lips,
my soul longs for your return.
Come back to me, come back, my love.
Only for you I burn.
Let my hands be your hands, mine eyes be yours.
For me, you are the best.
And only when you are come to me
is the turmoil in my heart at rest.
For my sadness flickers the whole night through.
My thoughts belong to thee.
My love, have mercy on my soul.
Sweet love,...
I miss you desperately.
I am empty without you, I fade into nothingness.
My love, come back to me.
My heart, it hungers for your lips,
my soul longs for your return.
Come back to me, come back, my love.
Only for you I burn.

For me, you are the best.

Return to Me
The sea took you away from me.
I watched you board the ship.
I waved goodbye so solemnly
while you prepared to take your trip.
It was cold, the fog curled hazy fingers
upon the shore so ghostly.
That picture upon the pier shall burn
forever in my memory.
The sea shall whisper its promises to you,
tell you stories I cannot.
I sit without you now inside,
grieving my sorrowful lot.
For it’s been so long since you returned.
I wait by the ticking clock.
I wait for you in your captain’s uniform,
for your ship to return to...

Children
(A rather morbid little funeral home piece and one I hope does not offend. My intent was not necrophilia but grief and tenderness.)
I have a most terrible love affair
with the dead. At times I wish
to curl up with them, they seem
so peaceful, so demure.
I watch as they sink like stones
through waves of green velvet,
tunneling through dry oceans
of earth
and they become children
I'm chasing down, handing them
one last rose, one last piece
of chocolate for the journey.

Time Travel
I want to leave this place I’m at,
to go backwards in time.
I swear I’d meet such treasures there,
so many joys I’d find.
I could swoon upon the velvet sofa
and wait in a dusty room
for my man to return his love to me
while I muse upon the moon.
I like the idea of tea and cakes,
of cucumber sandwiches.
Three lumps in my tea is right for me,
ah, such priceless riches!
For this life is barren, it bores me so,
cruel fate cares for me naught.
To travel back to the gilded past
is something I definitely ought.
to go backwards in time.

A Day Without Stirring
I am lost without you today, my love.
Even move I cannot do.
I lie in bed and cover my head
and long for only you.
I grasp my locket tightly to my chest,
inside is a picture of you.
I cannot think, I cannot stir,
I am consumed by memories, too.
Of your face in autumn, your lips in spring,
your winter loveliness.
I cry at the thought of you loving another,
my heart is in distress.
But you are hers, and hers alone.
She holds you in her arms.
I have lost my world, the man I love,
your preciousness, your charms.
Even move I cannot do.
I lie in bed and cover my head
and long for only you.
I grasp my locket tightly to my chest,

I cannot think, I cannot stir,

Don't Come Back
I was happy today, I shined so bright.
The skies were clear of rain.
Then I spotted your portrait on the vanity;
my heart grew numb with pain.
Oh, tell me why I left it there!
Oh, why was I so vain?
To think I would not care to see
your haunting face again.
I want you gone, I want you gone.
I want my tea and scones.
I want my books and my solitude,
oh, please leave me alone.
For Life is sweet when I’m to myself,
alone is when I’m sane.
I’m fine without you, I implore you, dear,
please don’t come back again.
The skies were clear of rain.
Then I spotted your portrait on the vanity;
my heart grew numb with pain.
Oh, tell me why I left it there!
Oh, why was I so vain?
To think I would not care to see

In the Afternoon
It is in the afternoon
when I fall softly into sadness.
The room is empty, too quiet
without you. Only when I sit
upon the porch, fragrant with
blossoms, and smoke my
pensive cigarette, does your
sweet face summon clearly in
my mind. You drink your
coffee, smiling, talking about
your day, the errant trivialities
of our quiet unreality. Leaves
fall in piquant rhythm to your
musical chatter. Your lovely
face bathed in pools of
radiant joy.
Grief is a beautiful woman;
she sits beside me
all throughout the hours.

The Men I Meet
The men I meet have faces folded
as delicately as my sash.
But my love, you fill me softly today;
the hours till we meet I must pass.
These men, they come with flowers and gifts.
Their hearts are loving and true.
Their eyes are filled with longing and stars,
but oh, they are not you.
I shall wait for you for eternity,
in snow, in spring, and rain.
I shall wait for your gentle knock at my door,
Shall wait till you come again.

Come Inside
Come in, my love, oh come inside.
The air is getting cold.
We’ll sit in chairs by the fireside,
together we’ll grow warm and old.
My stomach surges with love for you.
I adore you, can’t you see?
Don’t ever take your love away,
don’t withhold yourself from me.
The tea is brewed and ready for you.
Your pillows I shall fluff.
The clock is ticking, I cannot wait.
For me, you are enough.
If ever you stop loving me
sad tears I’ll surely cry.
Don’t ever take away your love,
I’d surely rather die.

Your Love Knows How
My heart is heavy and sad with yearning.
I sit and wait for you.
The winter is almost over, my darling,
the air is crisp and cool.
I move like a ghost in the afternoons.
I float throughout the days.
At night I lie under the coverlet,
seeking your warm embrace.
Your face, it haunts my waking hours.
Your absence chills me to the bone.
Without you I am forever lost, my dear,
forever lonely and alone.
For desperation has me in its grip,
I see nothing for me now.
Only you can release me from this lightless prison.
