POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
writing poetry doesn't make me a poet, who hasn't written poetry at some time or other...
He meets her for coffee and thinks
We sit and drink coffee and
chat,
but only of this and that...
Oh God, I could
do with a scotch!
and then, just watch!
the things I could do
and say!
but we just drink coffee
today...
chat,
but only of this and that...
Oh God, I could
do with a scotch!
and then, just watch!
the things I could do
and say!
but we just drink coffee
today...

REGARDLESS
I looked across the room
at you and thought,
if I could give you three wishes
would I be in any of them?
- - - - - - - - - -
and doubting it, I would
give them to you, regardless...

HE THINKS OF DEBTS
he thinks of debts
he can't repay
and then forgets
and drifts away
to linger where
his love will lay
(regardless there
of how he'll pay)
he can't repay
and then forgets
and drifts away
to linger where
his love will lay
(regardless there
of how he'll pay)

MENTAL BLOCK
Skilled archaeologists, no less,
Roped together, picks & shovels
Discarded in their nervousness,
Failed to excavate my tunnels...
I am this guy's disfigurement.
I am his buried memory.
And being better lost I meant
To frustrate their psychiatry.

And being better lost I meant
To frustrate their psychiatry.

PHANTASY IN SEA GREEN
a squadron of crabs
Comes slowly over the sand
causing panic in the trenches
of the lug worms
who are dug in
"where's the air support
they promised us?"
cries the chief petty bait
"the gulls?"

CLUBBIN' (You Looked Beautiful)
you wore a black dress, which shone
where it pressed against your skin
where it danced with a rhythmn
that was sensuous as film
amidst the haze & the scotch
and the flashing lights I watched
the silhouette of your thighs
drifting through the noise...

EARLY MORNING WOMAN
I always admired the way you looked tired
at 7am...
the ones who look smart at the start
of a day,
I never liked them.
your hair was a mess & I loved your creased dress
with it's uneven hem...
the cracks on your face had a beautiful grace
which softened the place
at 7am.

on her second day out of the hospital...
scabby pigeons limp
five floors below
her balcony
woolwich dockyard sinks
beneath their weight
platforms creak
ahead, another
block of flats
grey as clouds
"take me back
to the ward"
she asks
"take me back"
five floors below
her balcony
woolwich dockyard sinks
beneath their weight
platforms creak
ahead, another
block of flats
grey as clouds
"take me back

she asks
"take me back"

THERE PROBABLY ARE
You wish there were really elves
And faeries and enchanted woods
And magical things in the mist
Somewhere beyond the high street
But you know that there aren't,
Don't you - no of course you don't
You don't know any such thing -
Except that there probably are.

Somewhere beyond the high street
But you know that there aren't,
Don't you - no of course you don't

"Pigeon Post"
Why don't the people in this city like us?
It isn't us, they just don't like pigeons in general.
They say we crap everywhere.
Isn't that an urban myth?
Actually, no. We do crap everywhere.
Isn't that natural? Where do they do it, then?
I don't know; I'm not sure people do crap. I tend
to think that they regurgitate, like owls, only instead
of bringing up pellets they deposit their stuff in
paper bags or plastic containers, which they vomit
onto the pavement.
That's pretty clever.
It's the clever bigots that...
