POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
writing poetry doesn't make me a poet, who hasn't written poetry at some time or other...
down to one's roots ..
they're cutting down trees
because the trees are undermining
the roads and the streets
would I rather have roads
without traffic or streets without trees
I'm with the trees ..
because the trees are undermining
the roads and the streets
would I rather have roads
without traffic or streets without trees
I'm with the trees ..

do not forget ..
death doesn't get any clearer
the older you get
it just gets a little nearer ..
I'm sitting in the café
thinking how many times have I sat here
growing wearier and wearier ..

running free ..
he's nineteen, late for work
and as he leaves the railway station
he thinks, well bollocks to that
as he heads for the park ..

such a wealth of distractions ..
you know what it's like
looking for a particular book
which you know is somewhere
on the shelf
although no matter how diligently
you look
you always end up
reading something else ..

'clocked out ..'
don't get the whole 'clocking in' thing ..
you 'clock in' half an hour early
and nobody seems to notice,
but if you 'clock in' five or ten minutes late
you get docked half an hours pay.
so I stopped 'clocking in' at all, but
by then they sack me
for not turning up, although they'd
seen me every day ..

clyne gardens, swansea ..
spend the day with the scent
of wild garlic in my head,
and bluebells and buttercups
ev'rywhere I tread. I cannot
write anymore, but then
what more needs to be said ..

an enemy of the people ..
yes, you are right, I am an enemy
of the people, the people who think immigrants
are evil, and who do not believe in the right
to travel, except for themselves,
of course, when they go off on their hols ..
yes, you are right, of course, I am
an enemy of the people, I am an enemy of all that
The Daily Mail and The Sun and
The Telegraph extols ..

people seem grateful enough to put up with this stuff ..
they had closed the road
because some minor royal
was doing something for charity,
apparently, we were told ..
I asked the cabbie,
wasn't there maybe some way
around all this nonsense.
he said well, yes,
if you want to start
a revolution. not that
he meant, in all conscience,
to suggest ..

a different age ..
last time I saw her was back in the
early nineties
when she must have been, what, thirty three,
thirty four ..
I was a year or two younger,
although now that I see her again, I think
maybe not anymore ..

oh well ..
I'm sitting on a hill,
outside the ruins
of a castle, thinking
I really shouldn't have leaned
against that wall ..

not that close ..
bloke stops me,
asks me how far
it is to the pub.
which pub ?
he says, why,
to the nearest ..
to what ?
well, to us ..
to us ?
look, mate,
there ain't no
us ..

we don't go out ..
evenings, now, we rarely go out.
occasionally to the theatre,
of course, but then everything else
is already in the house ..
eat a good meal, watch
a film, enjoy a drink, in company I doubt
could be bettered, I think ..
